Showing presence of mind and living in the moment is not as easy as it sounds. This is because as much as you want to enjoy the present, thoughts and worries of the past and future distract us.

These distractions have become so common and invisible that we hardly notice them. They become part of our daily lives making us live frustrated and miserable.

Take for instance the regular 9 to 5 working class mother. In the morning she is in a hurry so that she doesn’t arrive late at work.

At work she is worried about so much work to be done before she can finish for the day. This is coupled to worrying about the welfare of her kids at home and in school.

On her way home she is thinking of her family and how she has to arrive home early before her kids get to bed.

At home she is thinking of how much work she has to deal with the next day. Looking at the kind of life, she will have to keep up with this race for the whole week, the whole month and the whole year.

I want you for a moment to think about how many years she will give to her job and how frustrating and depressing her life will look like.

Some people are so used to this type of life that it seems like a regular way of life. It doesn’t bother them anymore and they don’t see that their worries and absent mindedness is stealing their lives from them.

It is not that you are not supposed to worry about things to be done, you are not supposed to allow them steal the joy of the moment.

The distraction is so strong but you can overcome them by learning how to show presence of mind.

The first key to living in the moment is by realizing that you have been living a distracted life and it is time you change.

Acknowledging this fact helps you notice when these distractions come again so that you can control them and not allow them steal the joys of the present.

Living in the moment takes a lot of effort at first but as you continue to work on your ability to show presence of mind, you will see that it gets easier.

When it feels like you are getting lost in the moment, recall your actions and do less. Take one step at a time while being mindful to the fact that you are in the present so you might as well enjoy every minute of it.

Stop worrying about the future and try to spend at least 5 minute every day doing nothing. Savor that five minute without allowing your mind and thoughts to get lost.

That is how you train yourself to live in the moment and show presence of mind.
