How to know what you feel is love and not infatuation – The difference

But in this article we are going to be looking at the difference so that you can be able to recognize the emotion when you feel it. It is not only about you but how you can help your kids and teens when situations like these arise.

When you love someone you care greatly for this person and support him or her. You work together with someone you love to solve their problems being with them in good and bad times. You wish nothing more for someone you love than to grow and become better.

But when you are infatuated about someone, the feeling is also strong and instant but not as real as love. Infatuation gives you goosebumps. It gives you silly smile and fills your mind with unimaginable daydreams and fantasies.

Don’t get me wrong many love situations starts out as infatuation but this does not make both of them the same.

As a matter of fact, one the reasons why relationships end is because of infatuation. I wrote an article about it you can read about it here.

You start dating someone you thought was the one not realizing that you are under the influence of love hormones in your bloodstream. By the time this hormone wears off, you then realize that what you felt for this person is not the real thing but infatuation. Rather than live a fake life you have no other option but to call it off.

It is important that you understand the difference between love and infatuation so that you can control yourself in this situation or help someone you know understand.

Clear differences between love and infatuation

  • Love can grow gradually but infatuation is almost instant.
  • The love you have for someone can last for a long time but infatuation, though powerful, is short-lived.
  • When you love someone you are very aware of their perfections and imperfections and you accept this person for who he or she is. But when you are infatuated, you are blinded by the imperfection of this person and see only the perfect side. You already have an idealized image of this person so you don’t see anything other than that.
  • Love sees more than the physical attraction but infatuation is all about the physical.
  • Love can survive arguments but infatuation glosses over arguments.
  • Love is energizing while infatuation can be energy draining.
  • Love is being in love with someone while infatuation is being in love with love.

These are the differences between love and infatuation. I hope you learnt one or two things about this topic and can be able to differentiate these emotions when you or someone you know experiences them.
