對腐蝕介質進行處理是防止腐蝕很常用的途徑，它又可分為：去掉介質中的有害成分；在水中加入能減慢腐蝕的緩蝕劑水中溶解的雜質，易使金屬腐蝕的種類很多，尤其是溶解氧的存在，腐蝕特別嚴重因此，給水除氧成為防止鍋爐、換熱器及管道腐蝕的首要任務。
熱水鍋爐流過的水量很大，直供系統這些水還要流過熱力管道和散熱器，其防止水側腐蝕問題不僅涉及熱水鍋爐，還涉及到整個熱水供熱系統(有些熱水鍋爐房都沒有蒸汽源)總之，熱水鍋爐的除氧問題有其特殊性，往往比蒸汽鍋爐除氧存在的問題更多。
熱水鍋爐房無蒸汽源，故一般都不用大氣式熱力除氧真空除氧可不用蒸汽加熱，但要增設一套抽真空裝置，并且系統要保持很不錯嚴密；除氧器要設置在7—8米的樓層上，故也很少用過去曾采用過氧化還原樹脂除氧，其除氧效果好，水溫可以較低。
