Electricity Blackouts And Power Surges: How To Prepare And Survive

Though a rare occurrence, power outages and electricity blackouts are possible in any modern society no matter how much they try to prevent it.

We are humans so there are bound to be situations that might lead to power surges and blackouts and some of the causes might even be out of our control.

So the question is, what are you going to do when these power outages and electricity blackouts occur?

How prepared are you for a life without electricity for a few days or weeks depending on when the authorities are able to restore power to your city and neighborhood?

In this post we shall look at possible ways that you use to prepare and stay safe and comfortable but first, let us take a look at possible causes of these power surges and electricity blackouts in cities and states that affects millions of lives.

Common Causes Of Electricity Blackouts And Power Surges

  1. Natural Disasters

Natural disasters like snowstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes can generate damaging winds or debris that take down power lines.

There are also cases of earthquakes that took our power grids and stations like the ones that affect the nuclear plant in Japan and the 1989 earthquake in Canada where  experienced a power outage related to a solar flare.

  1. EMP Attacks

An EMP attack is another dangerous means that can cause a whole country to be in darkness because of its ability to cause power surges and blackouts.

In the past, the nuclear attacks were the most feared type of attack that could cause major damage to countries.

But now, EMP attacks are more feared because of its ability to knock out power grids and station thereby leaving a country in darkness.

Imagine all your electrical appliances not being about to function because of this attack. There is no way you can reach out to anyone either by phone call, email, radio connections will be down and nothing will work.

Experts estimate that about 90% of Americans might lose their lives one year after the effect of an EMP attack.

Though it has not happened yet, the fact that there is a possibility that such weapon exist means that it is only a matter of time before a country or terrorist group lay their hands on one and try it out.

Trust me, you want to be prepared for the worst case scenario.

  1. Cyber Terrorists

Cyber terrorists are also another reason why electricity blackouts and power surges could happen in any city or state.

I assume that you already know that the US utility grid is constantly under attack by hackers from foreign enemy countries and hackers trying to prove that they’ve got the skills to pull it off.

It is on record that Airports have also been hacked numerous times and there have been “Anonymous” attack against police services.

While the US cyber team is up to the tasks to prevent these hackers from gaining access to the system, if there is the slightest possibility that these hackers could win even from a minute, you don’t want to be unprepared for a life without electricity.

  1. Human Error

Human error and mistake has been known to cause electricity blackouts and power failures in the past.

In 2003, there was a “software bug” power outage, which affected an estimated 10 million people in Ontario and 45 million people in eight U.S. states.

Power grid was also affected by the 9/11 attack in the United State. So if there is a possibility that human error can cause your home to be without electricity even for a day, you will want to prepare for that scenario because you don’t want to be take unawares.
