Laid-back personality traits and characteristics
What are the characteristics of a laid-back personality? What are the traits you see in people that are laid back in everything they do?
Life is never to be taken too seriously with a laid-back personality. They are never in a hurry and don’t think anything is worth stressing over.
They don’t allow the worries of life to get to them as they always believe it will be okay at the end of the day.
Sometimes it works for them and sometimes it doesn’t work out as they planned. That said, situations that do not work out as planned are also handed over to the “It’s going to be okay” mentality.
Let us now go into a bit more detail about how a laid-back personality thinks and what goes on in their minds.
Is laid-back a personality trait?
Laid-back is a personality trait that falls into the class of the Type B personality. Unlike their Type A counterpart that is easily tipped into being frustrated, anxious, irritated, and angry, a laid-back personality is more about being calm and relaxed. They rarely get angry and tensed up.
Traits of a laid-back personality
- Seen as unserious
People with a laid-back personality are always perceived to be unserious people. A person that can never be irritated, always seems calm and relaxed, even in the face of trouble, is most times seen as unable to comprehend what is at stake.
- Simple in nature
A laid-back personality in their calmness is always simple in nature. They are called laid-backs because of their relaxed nature and simplicity. Complicated is not something they do well with and if it bothers them, they let it go not minding what is at stake.
Their inability to let things bother them is the reason why they choose the simple path.
- Avoids stressful situations
A laid-back personality will always avoid stressful situations and even in the face of turmoil will stay calm and relaxed.
Stressful situations don’t affect them as it does their Type A personality counterpart. Their ability to stay away from stressful situations is the reason why they are most times seen as being lazy.
Depending on the situation, it is possible that they usually find simple and smarter ways to get it done or delegate it to someone else because they don’t want to go through the troubles of stressing their minds to find a solution.
- Always never punctual
Because they are never in a hurry, people with a laid-back personality are usually late for meetings.
Do not be surprised if they don’t even show up in the first place. They are not to be taken seriously because a laid-back person barely takes anything, appointment included, serious.
- They do things in their own time
Getting a laid-back personality to take action before a deadline might be fruitless. Unless they deem it necessary, they might not do anything especially if it’s going to bother them.
Laid-back people do things in their own time according to how it suits them.
- Don’t make good leaders
From a general point of view, we can agree that the traits of a laid-back personality don’t reflect on the qualities of an inspiring leader.
Leadership entails a lot and demands commitments and seriousness. These are not qualities you will find in a laid-back personality.
Not being punctual, especially at important meetings and gatherings is not a good sign that inspires faithful followership.
Why Being laid back is good?
While being laid-back has its negative aspects, they are not all that bad in their dealings and everyday life.
Some people are naturally laid-back while some developed this personality as a result of events that have taken place over time in their lives.
These experiences have made them come to the conclusion that it is better if they don’t allow anything bothers them anymore.
Whether it’s a natural or trained-up personality, there are some of the advantages of being laid-back.
- They can be creative when relaxed
One of the reasons why laid-back people avoid stressful situations is that it messes up their minds and kills their creativity.
They are more creative when relaxed and calm. Putting them under pressure to take action turns them off which is why they avoid it at all cost.
- They don’t experience any stress-related illnesses
Because they don’t like getting stressed, laid-back people are able to avoid any stress-related diseases and illnesses.
They live a happy life and have little or no chance of suffering a heart attack unless they eat lots of junk foods that build up cholesterol which clogs their blood vessels.
- They are happier
Laid-back people are most times happier because they are always relaxed and have perfected the art of avoiding negative situations.
They are also good at avoiding negative people that suck out the vibes in them.
- Can be very social
Laid-back people are social people. They do well in communicated with strangers and friends alike. They have good public body language because they are confident and comfortable in their skin.
Carrying their body is something they do well because they have a healthy level of self-esteem.
Do laid-back people get angry?
It can be very rare for a laid-back person to be angry. They rarely get tense and cannot easily be made to experience stress.
They are also good at avoiding stressful situations which is why they avoid you if you have a history of making them angry.
Does laid back mean lazy?
Talking about laid-back people and laziness, there are two ways to look at it. It is common knowledge that a laid-back person will always want to do things his way and in his own time.
We would not call them lazy in this aspect. Not stressing over complex challenges can also drive them to find smarter ways to work around the situation or better-off hire someone that can easily solve the problem for them.
There is a fine line between working smart and avoiding work entirely. I wouldn’t say laid-back people are lazy, they don’t just process complicated the way some other personality types do.
How can I get laid back in life?
There are situations in life that absolutely demand that you become laid-back while there are the ones that need serious steps and actions to get things done.
The challenges we face in life come in two formats, the ones we have control over and the ones we don’t.
For situations you have no control over, it is recommended that you develop a laid-back mentality to them.
It is in this situation that you let everything go and hope it turns out in your favor. Learning to stay calm and practicing relaxation techniques can help you improve in this aspect of life.
On the other hand, I would not recommend a laid-back personality for situations in your life that are within your control to apply changes.
Nothing good comes easy because we all have to put in the work. If you are facing a tough situation on projects you are working on, keep at it and find smarter ways to get it done.
Letting it go because you want to develop a paid-back personality doesn’t make sense. It is more about what you intend to achieve with this personality.
That said, being laid-back is very necessary if you observe that you are uptight and get easily irritated and angry.
Getting easily tense affects your health, happiness, and general approach to life. It also affects your relationship with people around you negatively.
Learning to stay calm and relaxed even in the face of adversity can help you live a happier life.
How do I stop being laid back?
This section is for those that are too laid-back that it is affecting their productivity. If this is you, to stop being too laid-back, you must find ways to become proactive.
Sometimes it makes sense to exercise your mind and brain by thinking through a problem and finding solutions to it.
Abandoning every situation that applies minor stress to your mind will not help you make progress.
I understand that it might not be easy which brings us to the 30days challenge.
I believe that if you stick to a simple exercise for 30 days, you get better at it and get comfortable improving on it.
The first 7 days are hard. The 8th-14th days are the toughest. You begin to see an ease in difficulty as from the 15th day.
Start small and practice every day. You will notice something better as you go. And don’t be afraid to fail because you have to crawl before you can walk, then run before you fly.
